The Yellow Paint Mystery

I couldn't find the recipe for the campers yellow paint.
I couldn't believe it - well I shouldn't have.
It was there but buried in some drunken rant about formatting and blogger interfaces.

So here is the latest

I made it thicker for brushing most of it's going into bits you can't see.
The base is nearly right but the inside and the outside of the camper are different colours.
I like the outside (faded version) better.

The Last Weekend

Two days of fun.

Day 1

Repaired the passenger footwell.
Welding fun.
Not a bad job.
The welding into mid air was rubbish making a little fillet and running a weld around would take time but easier in the end.
Day 2

We went for a walk
This time I can remember what happened.
We went on a hunt for Minning Low

this picture from Megalithic Portal

As the picture suggests it dominates the landscape but it's the trees what do it.
When it was a what ever it was in the whatever age there would have been trees a go go.
So the monumental landscape I see is not what it was placed in.
And you can see it from Green Low.

Not The Royal Wedding

We ignored the whole affair quite successfully.

Thank you for the day off - I fitted the penultimate box/carcass into the campervan.
And serviced it.
And-finally repaired the push-rod tube that split on the way to Orkney.
Have a picture...

Well I would if the fecking thing would work.
I'm getting completely ticked off with this internet bollox.
Now my iPhone will not synch with anything else.
See long boring story about versions clash with IOS 4, Snow Leopard (I ask you - what nonsense) and old iMacs.
See it somewhere else I would describe it here - too tedious by far.
I'm sure you smart people will understand or google it.
Another go with the photo...
Nothing!
Lets try html,

hjello world

ifI type in red we can all read this.
I've lost control here - bastards.
This combination of editor, desktop, browser, blah de blah de blah
has snafu'd my efforts.
The iMac deals with white text from the blog.
What happens if I cahnge the design level settings for fonts n shit?
I Can now type in a reasonable editor.
Seems dumb to me that it can't handle white text on black ground.
Dumb and dumberest,
It does it into another font but can't deal with goths at the control.
I'm going for purple nail varnish next.
Thath will teach all you twats ouit there.
Laughing at my hair
I know you are

That doesnt work either - rats!
I'm bored.
Back to the van
I#ve mixed some paint
the light ivory 97.5%
yellow 2.5%
(RAL codes to follow)
(+50% white spirit )
I mixed 10g of paint and added 5 g of ws.
So its not 50% but you get it.
still a bit yellow
but damn near.

I think I sussed
Bastards this formatting was lurking!
I Give in
This was meant to be green on red
Somewhere maybe it is
Publish and be damned

My Spirits Rise

My spirit has been lifted by

  • The weather
  • Success with paint
  • The survival of the Mercedes
  • The Velvet Underground

Finally it feels like we have left winter behind. The dry weather and longer days are just what my psyche needed.

I've been getting very frustrated and that's always a danger of that turning into anger and depression. Faithful readers will know that lots of stuff that I either need or want to do happen outdoors.

So what did I do outdoors this weekend?

Paint

Firstly I got 3 coats of paint on the rear quarters of the camper and it's looking neato.
The recipe has had a slight tweek

The last entry about paint was obviously written the evening of the painting. The next day the last side to be painted was covered in tiny craters. I'm guessing that these were popped bubbles that then didn't flow flat.

Found some reference stuff that says 'paint too thick'.

So when I started the paint it was just thin enough.
Then it had thickened in the tray and on the roller by the time I'd got to the other side.

Or the paint had cooled after being inside.
So more White Spirit.
It works.
Just by chance Casper the junior ghost from over the road has sprayed his camper. For some reason his father Mister Ghost wanted to show me the results.
I had to be diplomatic.
My finish is better.
But I've taken a long while to get it, he painted the whole van in a
week. I think that considered he's done a good job.

Which is the point

  • I'm expending time and labour.
  • He's spending money.

On to the Merc.
Finally my insurers, who we shall call Equity Red Shite (ERS), have decided it's worth fixing after months of plain ineptitude. The details are far to boring to detail so here's the headlines.
Dec 17

  • Snow and ice make side street undriveable
  • We park to consider abandoning MB
  • Fool in some Pugeot childs car slides into MB front end.
Dec 22
  • Estimate of repairs from Charlotte Motors (£1K) emailed to ERS.
Dec 22 to now
  • An inabilty to hold on to documents,
  • understand common courtesy
  • and operate simple clerical process from ERS.

But at last they approve repairs, I think.
As they can't seem to answer correspondence I have to rely on an anonymous text from their engineers and an assurance from Charlotte Motors that they will invoice ERS.

Finally the Velvet Underground.
Sister Ray as loud as possible, on repeat.
I haven't listened to them recently but Radcliffe and Maconie have
The Chain which produced 'Pale Blue Eyes' and that is a thing of such beauty I had to listen to the third album.

Then the rest of them.

Loaded is playing at the moment

More Painting

Another session flattening and painting the camper with a new colour.

The nearside rear quarter had the orange peel effect removed.
Too much paint that was too thick caused it - it needs to be thin like the recipe above
I've upped the orange slightly.
This time I didn't overwork the paint.
Nice finish but the colour needs more orange

Bloomin' Heck

"Hell it aint raining"
Well it did and then got colder and ruined my paint.
A bloom appeared, maybe it will go away if the atmosphere ever dries out.
The colour however is getting very close and even if the surface does look naff at least it will keep the weather out.
I'll leave it alone for 2 weeks and cut it back and recoat.
Only 10 more coats to go.

It's Sunday now and of course not a drop of rain, still bleeding cold though.
We went for a walk.
I discovered where the big casting and molds were that I photographed yonks ago (20/04/2009)
Sorry I got distracted shopping for Bento boxes.

Saturday Routines

I'm not fond of grocery shopping - but who is?
Next was returning stuff to Go - Outdoors which was surprisingly easy.
Home for cleaning cars/vans.
Crunched neighbour Norman's number plate with the towbar on the Camper.
Worst thing is he heard it!
I was very humble.
He won't let me buy a replacement.
Jet washed the Merc, his Golf and the Camper.
Shampooed Merc.
It was 3.5C.
My paint aint supposed to be applied below 5C - but hell it aint raining.
New recipe.

CCCCCCCamper Time

(I Demand that you watch all 9:21 of these stiffs painting)

Could be a cutnpaste from last week but that's inaccurate and lazy.

The weekend had all the same elements but this time I feel satisfied

Saturday camper work

Finally the surface was dry at a time when I was there and had time to paint it.

Saturday morning off to Johnson/Leyland to pick up ral 2009 traffic orange rustoleum paint.

Super paint made out of fish to resist sea water.

Shopping in shops rocks especially specialist trade suppliers with staff who know their stuff.

I've been buying this paint online and it's no where near as much fun.

Last time it took longer to get to me.

They have real colour swatches in the shop.

Think of the complexity if you want to match colours off the WWW.

And you will fail.

They even offered to match the paint for me.

Which was nice but unnecessary as I have my colour.

Well very nearly

  • 80 ral 6110 crap brown
  • 20 ral????? Green green
  • 4 ral 2009 traffic orange
  • 50 White spirit

Near the original or at least.

A colour I like.

As is the tradition with vw campers, all panels are bent and different colours.

Well this one will have flat panels and consistent colour.

Probably take me about 4 years.

Yet again I'm playing a long game where I do everything with low technology.

The painting is being done with rollers, brushes and lots of fine abrasives.

About 12 coats should do it.

So far 1 coat looks flatter than the PO managed with a spray gun compressor.

He claimed to do it for a living.

Probably lies like "no rust on this camper"

Battery Woes

This blog was and is for my benefit and is a diary.
Here's a really boring entry.

Put a new starter battery in the camper.
Neglect had killed the last one and I need to regularly discharge and charge both batteries.
Charged the leisure battery.
6 weeks from now I need to do it again.
If I keep to this I won't have to keep buying batteries.
I've spent hundreds in the last 5 years.
Well at £70 a kick it's not difficult.
Having the Merc means I have to be careful to use the camper.
Next week it will be the first time used since Sept 09

I did warn you about the boredom quotient

Endless Sequence Of Camper camped 001

Maybe I'll even work out where.
